The Dust Bowl is the name given to the Great Plains region that was devastated during the Great Depression. This region had little rainfall, high winds, and light soil. This was a bad combination because the wind can pick up the dry soil and carry it. This turned into "black blizzards" so nobody oculd see and there was dust in the air so it was hard to breathe. This caused the farmers to move away from this area because they could not farm the area and it actually killed the cattle. The dust got in the cattles mouth and actually choked them to death. This topic only affected the farming community because it affected how they grow food and how they life their daily lives. This also affected those who lived out in that region during the Dust Bowl. The Dust Bowl relates to the Great Depression because it was in that time frame and it was a devistating blow to that community. This topic is interesting because it was another tragedy that had to happen during the Great Depression.
The Dust Bowl lasted about a decade. This put the South in an even more depression because they now had a loss of food, shelter and they didn't have clean air because of all the dust in the air. The wind put big clouds of dust in the air which put thick layers of dust on peoples houses and furniture. There are many dust storms each year. There was 14 in one year, then 38 the next year. They compared the Dust to snow drifts. That is what they looked like after a dust storm. In 1939, the first rain had fallen and it finally ended the drought named the Dust Bowl.
